I was disheartened this morning to wake up to heavy clouds and the wind STILL blowing heavily as it did the entire night! I hardly slept. But I was determined not to spend another day on the boat.

Stamattina ero appena svegliata ANCORA soffiava forte come ha fatto tutta la notte! Ho dormito poco. Ma ero determinata a non passare un altra giornata sulla barca.

But we got dressed and tok the dinghy to shore anyway.

Ma ci siamo vestiti e abbiamo comunque portato il gommone a riva. Le bandiere sventolavano tese nel vento.

Freddo, ventoso e alta marea!

This is the Portsmouth Floating Lighthouse, now a museum…and we highly recommend visiting the Naval Museum.

Questo è il faro galleggiante di Portsmouth, ora un museo… e consigliamo vivamente di visitare il Museo Navale.

As the day began to unwind, the weather began to get nicer, so we decided to stop and have breakfast.

Mentre iniziavamo a passeggiare per il paese, il tempo cominciava a migliorare. Quindi abbiamo deciso di fermarsi per fare una bella colazione.

The Olde Towne Public House was serving brunch…we ordered Breakfast Pizza. It was pizza covered in hollandaise sauce, topped with cheddar cheese and ultimately with scrambled eggs. It was so yummy! I have to make it at home! Serves with a Mimosa of course.

L’Olde Towne Public House serviva il brunch. . . abbiamo ordinato la pizza per la colazione. Era una pizza ricoperta di salsa olandese, condita con formaggio cheddar e infine con uova strapazzate. Era così delizioso! devo farla a casa! Servito con una Mimosa ovviamente, un cocktail fatto di prosecco e succo d’arania.

We took a stroll through Portsmouth….lovely little town but little to see because everything was closed. But we did stumble upon this little historic gem!

Abbiamo fatto una passeggiata per Portsmouth….graziosa cittadina ma poco da vedere perché era tutto chiuso. Ma ci siamo imbattuti in questo piccolo gioiello storico!

On the way back to the boat, we noticed the ferry to Norfolk…so we hoped on and headed for the other side of the river.

Ritornando verso la barca abbiamo notato il traghetto per l’altra sponda del fiume che porta a Norfolk…siamo saliti.

There is a beautiful park here with a lovely waterfront stroll. Of course the cruise liner took up most of the view!

C’è un bellissimo parco qui con una bella passeggiata sul lungomare. Ovviamente la nave da crociera occupava gran parte della visuale!

As we continued our walk around the cruise ship the Carnival Magic, we noticed something very unique. Can you see the 19′ Cape Dory Typhoon sailboat on dry dock next to the ship?

Mentre continuavamo la nostra passeggiata intorno alla nave da crociera Carnival Magic, abbiamo notato qualcosa di davvero unico. Riesci a vedere la barca a vela Cape Dory Typhoon da 6 metri sul bacino di carenaggio accanto alla nave? A confronto sembra un giocattolo da bambini!

This excerpt from Winston Churchill’s speech of May 13, 1940 made me think of the Ukraine situation.

Questo brano del discorso di Winston Churchill del 13 maggio 1940 mi ha fatto pensare alla situazione in Ucraina.

On the ferry ride back, we met Casey of Casey’s Marina in Newport. He told us of the impending sale of his marinas and retirement to follow. He was cruising the east coast on a steel 72′ utility boat from the 60’s that he restored and revamped for cruising. Nice fellow and we had a great conversation with him. He invited us to come stop by one of his marinas this summer….and we gladly accepted.

Durante il viaggio di ritorno in traghetto, abbiamo incontrato Casey di Casey’s Marina a Newport. Ci ha raccontato dell’imminente vendita dei suoi due marina e del pensionamento a seguire. Stava navigando lungo la costa orientale su una barca utilitaria in acciaio da 72 piedi degli anni ’60 che ha restaurato e rinnovato per la crociera. Persona gentile e abbiamo avuto un’ottima conversazione con lui. Ci ha invitato a fare tappa in uno dei suoi marina quest’estate….e abbiamo accettato di buon grado.

Later that afternoon, we sat on the bow of our boat and watched the Carnival Magic leave the dock, head upriver, turn the ship around and head out for the Bahamas. It was enjoyable!

Più tardi quel pomeriggio, ci siamo seduti sulla prua della nostra barca e abbiamo guardato la Carnival Magic lasciare il molo, risalire il fiume verso uno slargo che gli permettera` in invertire la rotta di 180 gradi, per poi dirigersi verso le Bahamas. È stato divertente!
