First stop in New Jersey would be Barnegat Bay.

Floriana motored out of Great Kills Harbor bound for Barnegat having discovered that the windlass had stopped working and the anchor (and chain) had to be pulled up by hand! Rather than stay at Great Kills and lose a day, we opted to sail to Barnegat and take our chances there for fixing the problem with the windlass.

Barnegat is another tricky inlet that requires local knowledge to negotiate. Especially with 20 knots of wind abeam, we thought it better to hail someone that knows the inlet well that could guide us in. A fellow sailor heard our plea and gave us great information. “Just favor the red buoys and hug the jetty wall and you’ll be fine.” For someone who’s always read that Barnegat inlet can be challenging, staying close to the jetties seemed counterintuitive at best. However, our guide was right-on-the-mark, and we entered the harbor without incident. The buoys led us to a beautiful anchorage area behind the Barnegat Lighthouse.

Alzando l’ancora per poter salpare scopriamo che il vericello si guasta, quindi, siamo costretti ad alzare l’ancora e la catena a mano! Invece di rimanere a Great Kills e perdere un giorno di navigazione, abbiamo deciso di salpare per Barnegat e risolvere il problema con il verricello al prossimo porto.

Barnegat è un’altro pass complicato e che richiede conoscenze locali per attraversarlo. Soprattutto con 20 nodi di vento al traverso, abbiamo pensato di contattare via VHF fosse qualcuno che conoscesse bene il pass. Un buon samaritano ha ascoltato la nostra comunicazione e ci ha fornito ottime informazioni. “Favorite le boe rosse all’entrata e tenetevi vicino al frangiflutto.” Sentirsi dire di accostare il frangiflutto sembrava nel migliore dei casi controintuitivo. Tuttavia si e` rivelata una informazione precisa e siamo entrati nel porto senza problemi. Seguendo le boe, abbiamo trovato un tranquillo ancoraggio sotto il faro di Barnegat.
