Come sail with me….the best is yet to be

October 8, 2024

This morning, we spent the day at the Archeological Museum at the castle.

We walked up an enormous number of steep steps to get to the entrance of the museum (I didn’t realize how out of shape I was …. I need to stop tasting all the local delicacies …. but not until AFTER this trip! LOL)

As we got to the top of the steps, we encountered a church built originally in 1083 A.D.

The cemetery is original to the church and, even though the skeletal remains have been removed, it’s interesting to see how rudimentary the tombs were built.

The museum was filled with artifacts dating back to the 5th century B.C. and it was amazing to see how well they had been preserved … some buried under centuries of topsoil and others lying dormant at the bottom of the sea for centuries. But my favorite exhibition was of the amphorae jars, … all sizes and types. 100’s of them!

Scenes from the museum

After a morning at the museum, we stopped for a refreshing spritzer.

And while I was sitting there enjoying my refreshment, I saw a very peculiar store across the street. It belonged to a local artist that made representations of the Greek Gods in clay! He reproduced the heads of the Gods, to look very much how the ancient Greeks would have had them as ornaments in their homes. For example, this is Eolo, God of the winds.

His entire window was filled with reproductions of the Greek Gods!

Time to leave Lipari and head to Panarea
