Welcome to Lipari
Lipari’s history….

Excavations in and around Lipari have uncovered cities of ‘huts’ that go back to the Neolithic era around 4,000 B.C. – This means that the first settlers to these islands date back 6,000 years! They were attracted by the abundance of black obsidian, a black glass-like volcanic rock useful for making tools and arms. The below pictures show not only what the hut villages looked like, but the sketch shows all the layers that were uncovered along with their artifacts. It’s amazing to me how archeologists manage to uncover every layer relating to human civilization and connect through artifacts the evolution of mankind!

Town of Lipari

Lunch at Lipari consisted of Pane Cunzato which is a typical Sicilian dish..

Pane Cunzato is a circular Italian bread layered with things like dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, anchovies, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, mozzarella and topped with shaved ricotta salata. The ingredients used can span the imagination, but what pulls it all together is the olive oil and splash of vinegar that the bread is brushed with before putting the ingredients together. Yummy!

And while Claudio ate his Pane Cunzato, I had Cozze Impepate… mussels and pepper. SSSOOOO good!

I can’t believe I ate the whole thing! (You ate it, Flori!!!!)
