Floriana

Come sail with me….the best is yet to be

October 4, 2024

We took a Ryan Air flight to Catania, in Sicily. This was the first time we’d ever taken this airline….and it might be the last! I was expecting to feel like I was part of a cattle round up, having taken Frontier Airlines for years to fly to Florida. However, this was even more hectic and more stressful. AND THEN WE LANDED. It felt like the aircraft dropped out of the sky! The pilot landed so hard; it sounded like an explosion! Some overhead bins opened unexpectedly, and one woman began to scream! I’ve been flying all my life and don’t ever remember a landing like this.

But as I walked out of the airport, I was greeted by the EU flag, the Italian flag…and olive trees!!!!

The drive to Portorosa was almost two hours long and I slept most of the way. But finally, we were at the Marina.

This little bridge overlooks a canal with condos and private dockage.

Dinner at the marina pizzeria was a treat!

Claudio ordered the classic Margherita

I ordered a pizza that is typical of southern Italian pizza tradition…escarole with pine nuts, olives, anchovies and capers. It’s covered during cooking to avoid that the ingredients dry out from the heat of the brick oven, so it looks like a calzone but has no mozzarella or tomato sauce. YUMMY!!!

I can’t believe I ate the WHOLE THING!
