Come sail with me….the best is yet to be

September4, 2024

From Block Island, we decided to take advantage of a favorable current and sail to Newport.

The next morning, we set out for a good breakfast and to explore Newport.

There are many areas of Newport, particularly at the harbor front, that allow you to be submersed in a rich heritage of trade that dates back to its charter.

The first English settlers arrived in Aquidneck Island in 1638 following a woman by the name of Anne Hutchinson, driven out of Boston because of her challenge to the religious beliefs of Puritanism.

Homes like these, a farmhouse built in the 1800’s, are what brings me out of modern times and makes me feel like part of the past. While Newport is known for the lavish mansions built by the tycoons of the mid 18th century, I love visiting the humble homes of those people who summoned up the courage to settle in unknown lands and start a life there. Kudos to them!

Look what I found! I bought a pair of earrings here AND a beautiful, polished Orthoceras fossil.

After our first day walking around Newport, it suddenly became 5 o’clock …. and everyone knows what happens at 5 o’clock…. cocktails!

Cocktails at the Wharf are fun because, while you sit at the bar and have a drink, the classic schooners come back into port.

Beautiful evening in Newport Harbor.
