Again we woke up to fog and drizzle. Of course we forgot to take in the cushions last night, and everything in our cockpit was wet this morning! Our goal today is be be at Mile Zero of the ICWW experience. This will mean crossing 7 bridges, the Great Bridge Lock and another 6 bridges before anchoring at Hospital Point.

The Coast Guard has been sending messages stating that the Great Bridge Lock is having technical issues and is working on generator power. Therefore, northbound boats can only access the lock on even hours for the time being. Our ETA to the lock should be 2:00 pm, but that;s if all the other 7 bridges prior work precisely as expected and that’s if wind or current don’t slow us down more than the 6 knots we’re currently doing.

Ancora una volta ci siamo svegliati con nebbia e pioviggine. Ovviamente ieri sera ci siamo dimenticati di sistemare le cuscinerie e stamattina tutto nel nostro pozzetto era bagnato! Il nostro obiettivo oggi è essere al Miglio Zero dell’esperienza ICWW. Ciò significherà attraversare 7 ponti, la chiusa del Great Bridge Lock e altri 6 ponti prima di ancorare a Hospital Point.

La Guardia Costiera ha inviato messaggi affermando che la chiusa del Great Bridge Lock ha problemi tecnici e sta funzionando solamente con l’alimentazione del generatore. Pertanto, le imbarcazioni dirette a nord possono accedere alla chiusa solo nelle ore pari oggi. I nostri calcoloi ci portano alla chiusa entro le 14:00, ma questo se tutti gli altri 7 ponti precedenti funzionano esattamente come previsto e se il vento o la corrente non ci rallentano più dei 6 nodi che stiamo facendo attualmente.

The fog finally lifted just in time to see the F18 jets fly overhead! The noise is deafening!

La nebbia finalmente si è alzata giusto in tempo per vedere i jet F18 volare sopra di noi! Il rumore è assordante!

We made it to the Great Bridge opening bridge at approximately 2:00 p.m. Unfortunately, the bridgetender decided that there were too many barges that needed to transit the bridge southbound, so he only allowed the barges to pass! This meant that the next bridge opening would be at 3:30 p.m. in order to coordinate with the locks opening. This left us with 1-1/2 hours of waiting, in a narrow canal, floating alongside other sailboats and large sport fishing boats, with wind on the nose! It was a less than ideal situation, but Larry and his wife waved us over and invited us to raft alongside their sailboat that was docked at the Great Bridge Free Docks.

Siamo arrivati al ponte di apertura del Great Bridge verso le 14:00. Sfortunatamente, il bridgetender ha deciso che c’erano troppe chiatte che dovevano transitare sul ponte in direzione sud, quindi ha lasciato passare solo le chiatte! Ciò significava che la prossima apertura del ponte sarebbe stata alle 15:30 per coordinarsi con l’apertura della chiusa. Questo ci ha lasciato con 1-1/2 ore di attesa, in uno stretto canale, galleggiando accanto ad altre barche a vela e grandi barche da pesca sportiva, con il vento sul naso! Era una situazione tutt’altro che ideale, ma Larry e sua moglie ci invitarono ad attraccare alla loro barca a vela che era ormeggiata al Great Bridge Free Docks.

Once we got going, we were the first boat to tie up on the starboard side of the locks. It was a 20 minute wait and suddenly the gates in front of us began to swing open. It was like being at the races….the gates open and they’re off!

Una volta partiti, il viaggio fino alla chiusa e` stato breve e siamo stati la prima barca ad attraccare a dritta della chiusa. È stata un’attesa di 20 minuti e improvvisamente i cancelli davanti a noi hanno iniziato ad aprirsi. Sembrava di essere alle corse di cavalli… si aprono i cancelli e via!

After passing 8 bridges, 7 of which were listed on the guide but one that wasn’t (!), we finally entered the home stretch at Mile 0.

Dopo aver superato 8 ponti, 7 dei quali elencati sulla guida ma uno che non lo era (!), siamo finalmente entrati nel tratto finale al Miglio 0.
