L’alba!!

This morning we got a late start because I had to go into Melbourne and do some banking. It didn’t take long, but it meant we didn’t cast off until 10:15.

Questa mattina siamo partiti tardi perché dovevo andare a Melbourne e fare un’operazionie bancaria. Non ci è voluto molto, ma comunque non e’ stato possibile salpare fino alle 10:15 di mattina.

We traveled approximately 40 miles today and we leisurely passed places with very interesting names: Honeymoon Lake (which we sopped at on the way south), Eau Gallie (which means Rocky Water) and, my favorite…. Dragon Point.

Oggi abbiamo percorso circa 40 miglia e passavamo tranquillamente davanti a luoghi con nomi molto interessanti: Honeymoon Lake (dove ci siamo fermati durante il viaggio d’andata), Eau Gallie (che significa acqua rocciosa) e, il mio preferito… Dragon Point

Dragon Point has an interesting story behind it.

Dragon Point ha una storia interessante alle spalle.

The dragon was created from 18 tons of concrete and steel and stood 35 feet high and 65 feet long! The idea was inspired by an American Indian legend that believed seeing a dragon rise from the mist would be a sign of good fortune. “Annie” sat where the Banana and Indian Rivers met and served as a landmark for local boaters. In August 2002, the sculpture was badly damaged, and partially collapsed into the water during a storm.

Il drago è stato costruito utilizzando 18 tonnellate di cemento e acciaio, ed era alto 11 mt. e lungo21 mt! L’idea è scaturita da una leggenda degli indiani d’America che diceva che vedere un drago sorgere dalla nebbia fosse un buon auspicio. “Annie” (il nome del dragone) e’ stato posizionato all’incontro dei di due fiumi, il fiumi Banana e il fiume Indian. Purtroppo, nell’agosto del 2002, il dragone Annie subisce dei gravi danni a causa di una violenta tempesta.

And while we sailed along and researched what all the names of the different areas meant, we came upon the NASA Causeway Bridge, a.k.a. Addison Point Bridge. As I read the guide, I realized that we had to hail them on Ch. 09 on the VHF radio so they, according to the guide, would open on signal. However, in smaller type it went on to read, “except that, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a,m, and from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. the bridge need not open.” I hailed the bridgetender and advised that we were in close proximity to the bridge and would need an opening. He responded that we had 7 minutes to make the 3:30 opening, that he could not wait for us to get there and that subsequently the bridge would close until 6:00 p.m.!!!

E mentre navigavamo e cercavamo il significato di tutti i nomi delle varie localita’, arriviamo al Ponte NASA Causeway, noto anche come il Ponte Addison Point. Mentre ci avviciniamo al ponte, via radio notifichiamo all’operatore che siamo a vista del ponte e ci serve un’apertura. Allorche’ l’operatore ci informa che abbiamo solamente 7 minuti per il passaggio altrimenti la prossima apertura sarebbe stata alle ore 18,00!!!

Claudio began to rev the engine’s RPMs until they were screaming. He managed to travel at 6 knots, with a strong current against us….and the Floriana barreled through the bridge opening with seconds to spare. Anyone who knows Claudio knows that he never races the engine to full capacity. But this time, he was determined to transit the bridge before it shut down, And he made it!

Claudio affonda l’acceleratore del motore fina a raggiungere i massimi giri del motore, e riesce ad ottenere 6 noti di velocita’ nonostante una forte corrente contraria. Il che ci consente di attraversare il ponte ma con pochissimi secondi rimanenti. Chi conosce Claudio sa che non porta mai il motore a pieno regime. Ma questa volta, era determinato a vincere questa sfida.

Wolfie peeked his head out of the hatch and asked, “Are we there yet?”

Wolfie da una sbirciata fuori dal boccaporto e dal suo sguardo pare chiedersi, “Quanto manca all’arrivo?”

We stopped at Titusville for the night.

Ci siamo fermati a Titusville per la notte.
