It amazes me how every day the challenge to navigation changes while we journey south on the ICW. While one day you may meander through narrow bodies of water in a serpentine manner, the next day you might motor straight through shallow marshes with barely 6 feet of water, and then another day the trip takes you so close to an inlet that it can either speed up or slow down your progress as much as 3 knots. The Savannah River crossing is no exception and is a perfect example of what we encounter.

Mi stupisce come ogni giorno il tipo di navigazione e di conseguenza il grado di difficolta` cambi. Un giorno serpenteggi attraverso vie fluviali strettissime, mentre un altro giorno ti trovi a navigare attraverso vie d’acqua paludose dove i fondali sono proibitivamente bassi, e ancora un altro giorno ti trovi a navigare le pass oceaniche dove le correnti generate dalla marea ti possono dare una spinta oppure rallentarti fino a 3 nodi. L’attraversamento del fiume Savannah non fa eccezione ed è un perfetto esempio di ciò che incontriamo.

If you look closely at the chart below, you will see that the ICW crosses the Savannah River and continues south on the other side.

La cartina mostra il tratto dove si attraversa il fiume Savannah.

As we head towards the river, we are travelling behind a strip of land whose waters are barely 12 feet deep. On the other side of that strip of land, directly in front of us, are two container ships crossing our bow.

Poco prima del fiume Savannah, stavamo navigando parallelo ad un banco di terra in acque profonde meno di 4 metri. Mentre facciamo l’approccio finale per l’attraversamento del fiume, incontriamo questi mastodontici porta container che ci attraversano la prua.

It’s amazing how we’re reading 8.8 feet of depth while, 400 feet ahead of us, those container ships are moving in more than 50 feet of water!

Rimaniamo meravigliati del fatto che mentre noi navighiamo in scarsi 3 metri d’acqua, davanti a noi (circa 100 metri) i portacontainer navigano in oltre 18 metri di profondita’!

We watch the second ship pass as we enter the river.

Riduciamo la velocita’ abbastanza per permettere alla second portacontainer di attraversare la mnostra prua.

And now we head for the red buoy that signals the entrance to the Savannah River.

E adesso ci dirigiamo verso la boa rossa che segnala l’ingresso al fiume Savannah.

On the other side, where it was less stressful, we spot this curiously colorful sailboat.

Dall’altra parte, dove tuuto era meno stressante, avvistiamo questa imbarcazione con colori curiosi.

Once anchored in Redbird Creek, Nero relaxes on the cabin top and watches the sun setting.

Una volta ancorato a Redbird Creek, Nero si rilassa sulla sulla tuga subito dietro l’albero e pare contemplare il tramonto.

And the captain mixes 5 o’clock cocktails!

E il capitano prepara il cocktail delle 17,00!
