The morning started well…. the sun was peeking through the clouds and the wind was mild. It’s laundry day!
La mattinata è iniziata bene…. Il sole faceva capolino tra le nuvole e il vento si era calmato. È il giorno del bucato!
Once chores were finished, we decided to visit the USS Yorktown Museum. And it was fitting that today it was Veterans Day. Thank you to all our veterans who, through their dedication and sacrifice have allowed us to live in a great democracy…free to express ourselves and be the best we can be. WE SALUTE YOU.
Una volta finite le faccende di bordo, abbiamo deciso di visitare la USS Yorktown Museum. Ed era giusto perche’ oggi era il Veterans Day, il giorno quando onoriamo il servizio ed il sacrificio dei nostri veterani di guerra. Grazie a tutti i nostri veterani che, con la loro dedizione e sacrificio, ci hanno permesso di vivere in una grande democrazia… Liberi di esprimerci e di essere il meglio che possiamo essere. VI ONORIAMO.
Next to the Yorktown was the destroyer, USS Laffey.
Accanto alla Yorktown c’era il cacciatorpediniere USS Laffey.
This 375-foot-long ship was part of the fleet that was involved in the D-Day invasion, as well as the battle for Okinawa. It was during the invasion of Okinawa that the ship was attacked by some 50 Japanese kamikaze airplanes. Although American fighter pilots did their best to keep the kamikaze from succeeding, six planes and four bombs hit the Laffey. Despite heavy casualties and an enormous fire that caused extensive damage to the ship, the Laffey survived to fight another day, including in Korea years later. She earned her nickname “The Ship That Would Not Die” for withstanding the most unrelenting kamikaze air attack in history.
Questa nave lunga 375 piedi faceva parte della flotta coinvolta nell’invasione del D-Day, così come nella battaglia per Okinawa. Fu durante l’invasione di Okinawa che la nave fu attaccata da circa 50 aerei kamikaze giapponesi. Sebbene i piloti da caccia americani facessero del loro meglio per impedire ai kamikaze di avere successo, sei aerei e quattro bombe colpirono il Laffey. Nonostante le pesanti perdite e un enorme incendio che causò ingenti danni alla nave, la Laffey sopravvisse per poi prestare servizio nella guerra di Corea anni dopo. Si è guadagnata il soprannome di “La nave che non voleva morire” per aver resistito al più implacabile attacco aereo kamikaze della storia.
And although all this history sounds, well, almost exciting, the reality was very different. I was watching film footage taken by a nearby support ship that showed clearly the kamikaze assault. I was seeing men who could just stare at the incoming plane, and at the fate that awaited them moments later. The thought of their sacrifice for the greater good made me think hard. My heart ached, I began to cry, I ran out.
E anche se tutta questa storia suona, beh, quasi eccitante, la realtà era molto diversa. Stavo guardando filmati girati da una nave di supporto vicina che mostravano chiaramente l’assalto kamikaze. Stavo vedendo uomini che potevano semplicemente fissare l’aereo in arrivo e il destino che li attendeva pochi istanti dopo. Il pensiero del loro sacrificio per il bene della nostra grande nazione mi ha inorgoglito.
Outside the wind was still raging on! It was 30 knots on the ground…but on the aircraft carrier they felt stronger!
Fuori il vento infuriava ancora! C’erano 30 nodi a terra… Ma sulla portaerei si sentivano più forti!
