It has been 30 days since we set sail from our home in New York. So far, we’ve had a slow and enjoyable voyage down the east coast of the United States….and today wasn’t any different. We went passed many areas of marsh and wetland, to the point where it was becoming almost boring.

Sono passati 30 giorni da quando siamo salpati dalla nostra casa di New York. Finora, il viaggio lungo la costa est degli Stati Uniti e stato piacevole. Anche oggi il viaggio e stato tranquillo e abbiamo quasi rasentato la monotonia.

And I was surprised to see how many parts of the ICW were narrow and shallow… the depths in some places on the ICW read less than 6 feet! I also realized that around these parts, when they say low tide, they really mean LOW tide! These floating docks were sitting on mud.

Mi sono anche resa conto che da queste parti, quando dicono bassa marea, intendono davvero BASSA marea! Questi moli galleggianti erano seduti sul fango.

And as I was enjoying my tranquil motor sail, I saw something in the water….I thought I had seen my first alligator, the way it was thrashing about!

E mentre procediamo sotto vela di prua e motore al minimo, vedo qualcosa aggitarsi nell’acquaualcosa nell’acqua….pensavo fosse un alligatore visto che questa zona ne e` popolata.

Then we saw two fins come out of the water.

Poi vediamo due pinne che escono dall’acqua.

The best view we got of this fish was at this point, when we realized we were probably looking at a small shark! The fins came in and out of the water in tandem, they were triangular, and they were light grey in color. I was so sure I had seen a shark that I googled whether sharks came into the ICW by the marshes. I found out that S. Carolina has the third largest inland migration of sharks on the east coast, especially during the winter months! WHO KNEW!

Ad una visione piu ravvicinata, realiziamo che invece era un piccolo squalo grigio. Ad affermare la nostra idea che fosse uno squalo erano le pinne triangolari che uscivano fuori dall'acqua in tandem. Eravamo così sorpresi di aver visto uno squalo in una zona paludosa che la curiosita ci ha spinto ad interpellare Google. Ed in fatti, abbiamo scoperto che la Carolina del Sud ha la terza più grande migrazione di squali sulla costa est degli Stati Uniti, and nelle zone paludose, e specialmente durante il periodo invernale! Non l’avremmo mai immaginato!
