Now I know why they call this place Cape FEAR.

Ora so perché chiamano questo posto Cape FEAR (tradotto… Capo della Paura!

From the anchorage at Mansboro Inlet, we re-entered the ICW at mile 285. I felt like we were on a highway driving a car: first we made a left onto the ICW, then we made a right into Snows Cut Channel. Snows Cut channel is narrow, has floating logs everywhere, and if you take it at dead low tide like we did (naturally!) sometimes your depth finder reads as low as 5.5 feet! Our needed depth to stay afloat is 5 feet.

Dall’ancoraggio di Mansboro Inlet, siamo rientrati nell’ICW al miglio 285. Ho avuto la sensazione di stare lungo un’autostrada marittima con diverse deviazioni (destra e sinistra) finche non entriamo nel canale di Snows Cut. Il canale di Snows Cut è stretto, ha tronchi galleggianti ovunque, e se lo prendi con la bassa marea come abbiamo fatto noi (naturalmente!) a volte il nostro ecoscandaglio registrava profondita pericolosamente vicine alla nostra ghiglia!

Finally, you spill into Cape Fear River with depths of 45 feet. Just as you were starting to feel safe, passing the Army’s Military Ocean Terminal, you see this ahead of you.

Infine, ci inmettiamo nel fiume Cape Fear con profondità di circa 14 metri. Proprio mentre stavamo sentendoci piu` tranquilli avendo scongiurato i bassi fondali, vediamo arrivare in lontananza un porta contianer.

And he’s barreling towards you getting closer…

E si sta dirigendo verso di noi ad una velocita` allarmante…

E si avvicina ancora…

Maybe too close (gulp!)

Forse troppo vicino!

And just as you think that he’s well past you, don’t forget to take in account the wake he leaves behind and is coming towards you!

E non bisogna dimenticare che quando una nave porta container ti passa, anche se e` a centinaia di metri dalla tua barca, l’onda di prua che sposta e considerevole. La sua scia ti ricorda quanto sei piccolo quando sei in mare e un monito da tenere sempre a mente….davanti a questi mostri del mare, meglio togliersi di mezzo!

It’s moments like this that make you realize how small and insignificant you are in the scheme of things….especially out on the water.

Sono momenti come questoi che ti fanno capire quanto sei piccolo e insignificante……soprattutto in mare.

The Cape Fear Inlet unfortunately slowed us down with it’s 2 knots of current against us. It was agonizing seeing our speed drop from 6.8 knots to below 5 knots…until we turned our bow towards Southport.

Il pass di Cape Fear purtroppo ci ha rallentato con i suoi 2 nodi di corrente contro. È stato straziante vedere la nostra velocità scendere da 6,8 nodi a meno di 5 nodi… fino a quando non abbiamo girato la nostra prua verso Southport.

We spent the night at the St. James Marina….good value for the money, modern facility with all the amenities, and it even has a little restaurant on premises that makes yummy mahi tacos.

Abbiamo trascorso la notte al St. James Marina…. Un buon rapporto qualità-prezzo, struttura moderna con tutti i comfort.
