Today we sailed from Solomon Island in Maryland to Deltaville in Virginia.

We woke up to a beautifully sunlit day that had a chill in the air! The night before, temperatures had dropped to an unseasonable low of 42 degrees, and the sun did little during the day to bring them back to their normal highs of 65 degrees. But thankfully, we navigated in calm waters with the wind and current in our favor, and we sailed at 7.5 knots the entire way down.

Oggi abbiamo navigato da Solomon Island nel Maryland a Deltaville in Virginia.

Ci siamo svegliati in una giornata meravigliosamente soleggiata ma con una temperatura piutosto fredda! La sera prima, le temperature erano scese a un minimo fuori stagione di 42 gradi (circa 4 gradi Celsius), e il sole ha fatto poco durante il giorno per riportarli ai loro massimi normali di 65 gradi (circa 16 gradi Celsius). Ma per fortuna, abbiamo navigato in acque calme con il vento e le correnti a nostro favore, e abbiamo navigato a 7,5 nodi per tutta la giornata.

On our way down, we passed the mouth of the Potomac River. It is the fourth largest river on the Atlantic Coast of the United States, famous for being the home of George Washington, Mount Vernon, situated on the banks of the Potomac below Washington, D.C. The Smith Point Lighthouse marks the entrance to the beautiful river.

Durante la nostra tratta, abbiamo superato la foce del fiume Potomac. È il quarto fiume più grande sulla costa atlantica degli Stati Uniti. E` noto anche per essere stata la residenza di George Washington, Mount Vernon, situato sulle sue rive del Potomac a sud di Washington, DC. Il faro di Smith Point segna l’ingresso al bellissimo fiume.

After eight hours and 58 miles of navigation, we finally reached the entrance to the Piankatank River which would lead us to the anchorage at Fishing Bay in Deltaville. The entrance required lots of attention to the navigational aids as it was a dog-leg channel.

Dopo otto ore e 58 miglia di navigazione, abbiamo finalmente raggiunto l’ingresso del fiume Piankatank che ci avrebbe portato all’ancoraggio di Fishing Bay a Deltaville. L’ingresso richiedeva molta attenzione alla navigazione in quanto era un canale che procedeva a zig-zag.

Once inside the harbor, we anchored in approximately 18 feet of water, among several boats also heading south, mostly Canadian, in a tranquil and pristine setting.

Una volta all’interno del porto, abbiamo ancorato in circa 18 piedi di acqua, tra diverse barche dirette ancheloro a sud, prevalentements canadesi, in un ambiente tranquillo e incontaminato.
