The plan was to sail 67 nm to Cape May Inlet, provided we could maintain a hull speed of 6 to 7 knots. With the days getting shorter, it is imperative that you arrive at the head buoy of the inlet you intend to enter no later than four o’clock. This will allow you enough time to enter the harbor and set your anchor before sunset.
But of course, the wind became light…. the speed dropped to 5 knots…. and we would not make Cape May Inlet before darkness fell upon us. Therefore, Plan B (you must always have a Plan B) was to go 36 nm to Atlantic City instead. We entered the inlet at approximately one o’clock in the afternoon and, with online marina reservations through the Dockwa.com site,

We managed to get a slip for the night in front of the Golden Nugget Casino. The marina staff were very helpful, and the facilities were clean (bathrooms, showers and laundry). The cost of the slip was less than $100 including a tip for the marina staff. Can’t beat that!
It was a beautiful evening with Atlantic City lights and a full moon to keep us company. A little dinner, a little playing (I lost $10!)… and we slept like babies.
